Practical tips for riding a scooter on the Riviera
A few simple pointers to enjoy the Ligurian Riviera by scooter without worries, from parking to the weather.
Parking and restricted traffic zones (ZTL)
In the historic centres of Cervo, Diano Castello, and the La Pigna area of Sanremo you often find restricted traffic zones (ZTL): leave the scooter outside, in the allowed areas, and continue on foot.
On the Diano Marina seafront and in nearby towns you will still find parking dedicated to two-wheelers, usually marked with reserved white or yellow lines: always check the local signage.
Scenic roads
The Via Aurelia offers sea views around every bend, but it is also a busy road in high season: ride carefully and keep your distance.
The hinterland roads towards Diano Castello and Diano San Pietro are quieter but have ups and downs and tight bends: keep a moderate speed, especially on shaded hairpin turns.
Safety and weather
The helmet must always be worn and is included in the rental. On the seafront the wind can be stronger than elsewhere: keep this in mind, especially in the late afternoon.
After a storm the road surface can stay slippery, particularly on road markings and manhole covers: slow down and increase your braking distance.
What to bring
Always carry your documents (licence and ID), sunscreen, and a bottle of water, especially in the warmer months.
A light foldable rain jacket weighs nothing and can save your day if the weather suddenly changes, which isn't rare on the coast.
Best season
The Riviera climate is mild almost all year round, but spring and early autumn are the ideal times to ride a scooter: pleasant temperatures, less traffic, and perfect light to enjoy the coast.
In short
- In historic centres like Cervo, Diano Castello, and La Pigna in Sanremo the scooter must be left outside the ZTL and you continue on foot.
- The helmet is always included and mandatory; watch out for wind on the seafront and slippery road surfaces after rain.
- Spring and early autumn are the best season to ride a scooter on the Riviera: mild climate and less traffic.
